Falmouth High School - Studio Art

Meets daily

Studio Art One

Students in Studio Art One spend the semester reviewing basic materials and processes of art making.  There is an emphasis on observational drawing skills and sketchbook building.

Studio Art Two

Students in Studio Art Two spend the semester building their art making skills using more advanced materials and processes.  There is a continued emphasis on observational drawing as well as sketchbook assignments and figure studies.

Advanced Studio Art / Honors

Students in Adanced Studio Art spend the year taking the skills learned in previous courses to approach advanced topics using a variety of media. Projects are often community based and interdisciplinary, involving research and personal experiences via field trips and hands-on demonstrations.  Works made in this course are displayed in and out of the school setting.

AP Studio Art

Students in AP Studio Art spend the year making works to complete a portfolio to submit for review to the college board for AP credit.  Artworks made in this course are displayed in and out of the school setting. Students also curate their own small group art shows in the spring as part of their participation in this course.

Falmouth High School - Graphics

 

Graphic Design 1

This course introduces graphic design using Adobe Creative Suite, which focuses on solving design challenges for print communications as well as personal visual expression.

Students apply the elements and principles of design while exploring typography, layout, composition, and image manipulation. 
Students with an interest in print communications and/or digital art are 
encouraged to take this course.

 

Graphic Design 2 

Prerequisite: Completion of Introduction to Graphic Design CP1 with B- or better. This course expands upon students 
understanding of solving complex design challenges by exploring more advanced techniques using Adobe Creative Suite.

 

Students begin to build a portfolio of their designs and are encouraged to pursue personal creative interests.

 

Graphic Design 3/4

These courses continue to build on students’ previous knowledge 
and experience working with Adobe Creative Suite to solve design challenges. These offerings are for those who are interested in 
pursuing graphic design, animation, web design, game boarding, and/or communication studies.

 

Students may have an opportunity to earn an Adobe Certified Associate certificate with 
passing a multiple choice and online simulation exam.

 

Students who earn an ACA designation are armed with the credentials to get summer internships, a first job out of school, and may be eligible for credit in college level programs in design.

 

Animation

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Graphic Design 1 or Introduction to Studio Art. 

 

In this course, students explore digital 
storytelling. Through the use of electronic drawing methods. 

 

Students use the elements and principles of design to create their animated composition.

 

Students learn how to effectively combine
visual graphics with sound effects. This course offers an introduction to the rapidly expanding career path in animation.

Falmouth High School - Ceramics

Intro to Ceramics

This course is an introduction to ceramics at the high school level and is designed for students of all abilities. Students apply the elements and principles of design to create functional and nonfunctional clay pieces. Through observation, abstraction, invention and expression, students gain skills in hand building techniques such as slab, drape, and coil. Students explore prefire design techniques and attachment skills, are introduced to the potter’s wheel, and learn to finish clay pieces using low-fire glazing techniques. Assessment is based on pre-planning, project specific rubrics, teacher observation of work habits and technical/creative growth.

 

Ceramics 2

Prerequisite: Completion of Introduction to Ceramics CP1 with Bor better. This course extends students’ knowledge and use of hand building and low fire glazing techniques. Students use the potter’s wheel as a technique to create simple wheel-thrown forms such as bowls, mugs, and pitchers, and use these forms in building non-functional structures as well. The elements and principles of design are used to create ceramic pieces based on the expression of ideas and emotions. Through observation, abstraction, invention and expression, students creatively solve ceramic problems. In addition, the work of ceramic artists and cultures are explored and researched. Students create, plan, and produce a ceramic art show in the FHS Student Art Gallery. Assessment is based on pre-planning, project specific rubrics, teacher observation of work habits, and technical/creative growth.

 

Ceramics 3 Honors

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Ceramics II CP2. This course is students interested in furthering their ceramic studies through student initiated projects, which require extensive research on the specific theme or topic given by the educator. Students use acquired knowledge of ceramic techniques including hand-building and wheel-thrown methods from Ceramics I and II to achieve desired effects and are able to verbally and in written form defend their processes and aesthetic choices. The elements and principles of design are purposely used to create meaning and emotion in clay pieces. Images and forms are composed to create ideas and personal points of view. Classes create, plan, and produce a ceramic art show. Assessment is based on pre-planning, pre-conferencing, project specific grading criteria, teacher observation of work habits, and technical/creative growth.

Lawrence Jr. High - Grade 8

Every student recieves one Trimester Art class per year.

 

ART CLUB is available after school
Art Club begins Wednesday, January 6th and will be held every Wednesday and Thursday for the remainder of the year.

 

January and February is clay workshop. March and April is Ukrainian style egg decorating.

May is dance decorating prep.

 

The cost to join the club is $5 per person. If you are interested, show up in Mrs. Phares Art Room after school on January 6th.

National Honors Society - Falmouth High School 
Videos and/or Class Description

 

The National Art Honor Society inducts sophomores, juniors, and seniors annually.
Sophomores and juniors are inducted if they have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 in all art and design courses with at least one of those courses having a final grade of A- or better. In addition, candidates must be currently enrolled in an Art & Design Department course offering.

 

Seniors must satisfy the above criteria AND be currently enrolled in an upper level Art & Design course in the first semester of their senior year as well as complete a minimum of 30 hours of art-related community service.
 

To graduate with honors in Art, a student must maintain continuous enrollment in FHS Art & Design courses, be an active member of the National Art Honor Society, and have completed at least twenty hours of art-related community service using art skills.
